James J. “Barry” Farrell, a lifelong resident of Holyoke and
co-founder of the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, attended St.
Jerome Grammar and High Schools, graduating in 1933.
Barry travelled nights by train to and from The New England
School of Anatomy in Boston where he received his degree
in Mortuary Science and was licensed in 1952. He served
with the United States Marine Corps during World War II.
Barry worked for the John B. Shea Funeral Home for thirty-
seven years and then joined Messier Funeral Home, which
became Messier-Farrell Funeral Home in 1973. After eleven
years with Messier Farrell Funeral Home, Barry co-founded
the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home with Barry J. Farrell.
James J. “Barry” Farrell passed away on April 26, 2002.
Barry J. Farrell, a lifelong resident of Holyoke and co-
founder of the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, attended
Sacred Heart Grammar School, Blessed Sacrament School
and was a 1980 graduate of Holyoke Catholic High School.
He attended Holyoke Community College and New England
Institute in Boston, graduating in 1982. He is a member and
past President of the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade
Committee and former member of the Board of Directors of
City Co-Operative Bank. Barry worked for the Messier-
Farrell Funeral Home for seven years before co-founding the
Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home with his father in 1984.

The Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home is a third generation; family owned
and operated funeral home. We have been serving the families of
Holyoke and the surrounding area since 1937, and have been at our
current location, 2049 Northampton Street in Holyoke, for over
twenty-seven years. Our objective is to provide quality services for
each individual family, in a manner consistent with the values of the
Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home. Our caring services and compassionate
staff allow us to treat each family with respect and sensitivity during a
very difficult time. Our philosophy regarding funeral service is that no
two funerals are the same. Each family we serve has unique and
important needs that we strive to satisfy. We offer complete funeral and
cremation service and will never lose sight of the needs of the families
