Josephine “Joan” (McDonald) Shevlin, 86, of South Hadley passed away on September 21, 2017 with her loving family at her side. She was born in New York City, NY, to the late John and Josephine (Lappin) McDonald. Joan attended South Hadley Public Schools. Later in her life, she attended the Holyoke Trade Practical Nursing Program and then worked as an LPN at Holyoke Hospital. She continued her education at STCC's nursing program and earned an Associate's degree. During her long life, Joan enjoyed playing bingo, knitting, crocheting, and was an accomplished seamstress. She also enjoyed sharing her love of music whether it bepiano, keyboard, autoharp, or organ with family and friends. She often visited skilled nursing facilities to play for the residents which brought her great joy. After 40 years of marriage, Joan was predeceased by her first husband, Emile Bocon. She was also predeceased by her second husband in 2003, Edward Shevlin. A younger brother, Joseph Czarneicki, also passed away before her. Joan is survived by her son, John Bocon and wife, Lori. She leaves two grandchildren, Sarah Hamel and John Bocon Jr. as well as four great grandchildren. She also leaves her sister, Carol Edgerton, along with many nieces and nephews. The Funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 27th at 9:00 a.m. from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Patrick Church, 30 Main Street, South Hadley. Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery, South Hadley. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
