SOUTH HADLEY:  June Cowles (Borth) Smith, 77, of South Hadley, MA passed away on Monday, September 4, 2017.  She is predeceased by her parents, G. Gordon Cowles and Dorothy (Heavens) Cowles, siblings Paul Cowles, Janice Millard and Robert Cowles. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Russell J Smith Jr,  her sister Ella Huyler and two sons, Frederick John Borth (Amanda) and Jeffrey Allen Borth. June had 6 grandchildren, Stephanie, Justin, Jacob, Jason, Ryan, and Amber, three great-grandchildren Kody, Emily and Tork, as well as many nieces and nephews. June was born in Waterbury, CT on June 3, 1940.  She grew up in Woodbury, CT and graduated from Woodbury High School.  She attended Holyoke Community College and Springfield College and received her degree in Education in 1970.  June dedicated her life to teaching and worked in the Holyoke Public School system for 30 years.  She enjoyed seeing her former students’ successes and took great pride in knowing she influenced them in many positive ways. An avid card player and Red Sox fan, June was happiest watching her baseball team or working a complicated puzzle.  Baseball was a big part of her life and the quest to attend every major league stadium was something that she and Russell enjoyed doing together in summertime when they were not at their lake house in the Berkshires. Another of June’s passions was her volunteerism especially at United Congregational Church in Holyoke where she was an active member of the choir and the South Hadley Senior Center.  Brief calling hours will be held at United Congregational Church, Skinner Chapel at 9am on Saturday followed by a memorial service at 9:30am.  Burial will be at Forestdale Cemetery, Holyoke, MA.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of one’s choice.  “The lake is calling and I must go.”
