Margaret R. Fitzgerald passed away on Monday, July 31, 2017. Born in New York City on January 9, 1922, daughter of the late John and Margaret (Ryan) Vonasek, she grew up in the Village of Hempstead (L.I.) New York, graduated from Hempstead High School and the Hempstead Business School. Margaret was a longtime secretary in the Physics Department of Mount Holyoke College. She was active in her community as well as a member of numerous local and civic organizations. She was a fund raiser for various health related organizations and was a volunteer for the South Hadley Board of Health, as well as the Council on Aging Senior Center where she helped in the Meals on Wheels program, as well as other programs there. Margaret was an officer and board member of the South Hadley Friends of the Elderly. She was a communicant of Saint Patrick’s Church in South Hadley, where she was a member of the Ladies Guild and a participant in the Kate’s Kitchen Group. She was also an Associate of the Sisters of Providence in Holyoke, by whom she will be dearly missed, as well as by all the residents of Providence Place in Holyoke where she had lived for nine years. Margaret was predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, Maurice Fitzgerald. She is survived by her three sons: Joseph (Sally), Daniel (Beth), and Robert; her five precious grandchildren: Megan Pane, Carrie Cain, Keely Krantz, Brian Fitzgerald and Andrew Fitzgerald; twelve cherished great grandchildren: Taylor, Caroline, Jack and Molly Pane, Will, Jed, Jack and Lindsay Cain, Aidan and Ryan Krantz, Elin and Cady Fitzgerald, and her dear friends; Kathy Paterson, Connie O’Dell, Sr. Mary Shea, and all her other dear friends of the Sisters of Providence. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Margaret’s Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, August 4th at 9:15 a.m. at Saint Patrick’s Church, 30 Main Street, South Hadley. Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam. The Fitzgerald family will accept condolences at the church on Friday morning from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. prior to the Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to South Hadley Council on Aging, 45 Dayton Street, South Hadley MA 01075.
