Albert J. “Bert” McCarthy, 98, of Holyoke and South Hadley, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke. He was born in Holyoke, son of the late Albert J. and Mary A. (O’Donnell) McCarthy and was educated in the Holyoke schools. Bert was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. A longtime Insurance Agent, he was the owner of the Bergmann Insurance Agency in South Hadley, retiring in 2007 after a fifty-year career. He was a communicant of Saint Patrick Church in South Hadley, and a member of Holyoke Knights of Columbus Council 90. Bert was the widower of Eleanor M. (Bergmann) McCarthy, who predeceased him in August of 1985. He is survived by a son, Albert J. McCarthy Jr. and wife Debbi of Westfield; three daughters: Noreen Dion of Peterborough NH, Alice Moreau of South Hadley, and Eleanor Bourque and husband Ken of South Hadley; eleven grandchildren: Patti, Katie, Greg, Bob, Patrick, Colleen, Keriann, Jeff, Jamie, Jason and Jackie Rose; twenty-one great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, a brother-in-law James Mooney Sr. of Holyoke, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Bert was predeceased by his grandson Danny Bourque, a son-in-law John Dion, two brothers, Edward and Francis McCarthy, and a sister, Mary Mooney. The funeral will be held Saturday, December 23rd at 8:45 a.m. from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, followed by a Mass in Saint Patrick Church, 30 Main Street, South Hadley, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Saint Jerome Cemetery, Holyoke. Calling hours will be held Friday, December 22nd from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke Inc., PO Box 1338, Holyoke MA 01041 or to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York NY 10004.
