HOLYOKE

Carrie L. (Henderson) Buckner, age 76, of Holyoke passed away on Friday, October 27, 2017 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.  She was born in Montgomery, AL and had lived here for many years. Carrie was retired from Holyoke Community College where she had served for many years as the Director of the Tutorial Program. Carrie was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in Springfield, Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary and the Quota Club. She was a Board Member at the Holyoke Health Center, a Mentor at the Chicopee Women’s Prison and former Vice President of the Holyoke/Chicopee NAACP.  Carrie was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Member and was a Massachusetts Democrat Delegate. She was the widow of Whittie Buckner. Carrie is survived by three children, Belinda A. Rocha of Springfield, Kim M. Rocha of Holyoke and Tyrone V. Buckner of Holyoke; a grandchild, Shayla Y. Scruggs of Holyoke; five siblings, Daisy Callins and Willie Mae Gresham, both of Pensacola, FL, Margie & Carlton Hampton of Milwaukee, Jean Odom of San Antonio, TX, Henry & Rose Henderson of Hyattsville, MD and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Richard Henderson. The family would like to give special thanks to the Baystate Medical Center Nursing Staff and the D’Amour Center for Cancer Care staff. The funeral will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam.  Calling hours will be held Friday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary, Court 290, c/o of Romona Thomas, 37 Chapman Street, Indian Orchard, MA 01151-2032.
