HOLYOKE: Fran “Doc” Michael Baker died Sunday, July 23 at his home. Born December 2, 1932 to the late Susan Cassidy Baker and Francis J. Baker. A lifelong resident of Holyoke, Fran attended Holyoke High School and Westfield State College and earned his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from Illinois College of Chiropody and Foot Surgery in Chicago. Doc proudly served his country as a veteran of the U.S. Army. He devoted much of his free time to serving worthy organizations in Holyoke, including the St. Patrick’s Parade Committee where he served as past president and was a former Grand Marshal, The Lodge of Elks and Holyoke Community College, where he held leadership positions. For over 50 years, Doc had a private practice on Suffolk Street and also served many area nursing homes. Fran is survived by his two children, Keri-Sue Baker and Brian F. Baker. Four grandchildren: Michael F. Baker, Kathryn A. Baker, Hannah C. Baker and Kristin C. Baker. Predeceased by his wife Bonnie J. Callahan Baker. Doc also leaves countless friends who he touched with his kind-hearted and entertaining spirit! Calling hours are Thursday, July 27 from 8-10 am at Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street in Holyoke. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street. His burial will take place in St. Jerome’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holyoke Community College Scholarship Fund, 303 Homestead Avenue, Holyoke, MA 01040.
