Edward T. Fitzgerald

HOLYOKE:  Reverend Edward Thomas Fitzgerald, age 84, a Priest in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield for the past fifty-nine years, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at Mary’s Meadow in Holyoke. He was born in Holyoke, son of the late Michael F. and Nora (Greaney) Fitzgerald Sr. and graduated from the former Sacred Heart High School. He prepared for the Priesthood for eight years, graduating from Saint Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore in 1959. He was ordained a Priest on May 23, 1959 at Saint Michael Cathedral in Springfield by Most Rev. Christopher J. Weldon D.D., Bishop of Springfield. He served as an assistant at Blessed Sacrament, Springfield, Immaculate Conception, Easthampton, Saint Michael Cathedral in Springfield, and Saint Agnes in Dalton. Father Fitzgerald was a United States Army Chaplain from February 4, 1967 to April 18, 1970 with service in Vietnam. He also served as Chaplain at Mount Saint Vincent Nursing Home in Holyoke and Our Lady of Providence Children’s Center in West Springfield. Father Fitzgerald served as a Pastor of the following Parishes: Immaculate Conception in Easthampton from 1978 to 1988 and All Saints in Ware from 1988 until his retirement on May 31, 2017. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Michael J. Fitzgerald and Thomas J. Fitzgerald. Father is survived by a sister-in-law, Marie Fitzgerald of FL; four nieces and nephews: Maryanne Alben and her husband Timothy of Yarmouthport MA, Michael Fitzgerald and his wife Marilyn of Holyoke, Kathleen Higgins and her husband Peter of Holyoke, and David Fitzgerald and his wife Sharon of IL; he also leaves many grand nieces and nephews, and one great grand- niece. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at All Saints Church, 17 North Street, Ware. Rite of Committal with United States Army Military Honors will follow at 12:15 p.m. at Saint Jerome Cemetery, 1666 Northampton Street, Holyoke. Calling Hours will be held Monday, May 14th at All Saints Church from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service to take place at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of all flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Father Fitzgerald’s name to the Sisters of Saint Joseph, 577 Carew Street, Springfield MA 01104.
