HOLYOKE
Edward Arthur Miles, Jr. has passed through our halls for the last time. He was born in Holyoke on October 11, 1929 and passed away on his birthday on October 11, 2109 at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. Ed was an only child to Edward A. Miles, Sr. and Ruth (Astley) Miles, and attended local schools, graduating from Holyoke High School in 1947. He attended Westfield State College for a couple years as well. Ed was drafted into the United States Army and served from March 19, 1951 to March 8, 1953. He was stationed in Japan and Korea during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars. Following his discharge, Ed returned to his Holyoke home where he would spend the rest of his life. He worked for the City of Holyoke Department of Public Works, doing “a little bit of everything” and working his way up in the department for a total of 33 years. Ed was known around Holyoke for his easygoing disposition, and was nicknamed “Easy Ed.” He was well-liked and had many friends with whom he would enjoy a cup of coffee and conversation regularly at Luchini’s and McDonalds in Holyoke. He was a faithful parishioner of the former Grace Congregational Church in Holyoke. In his free time Ed enjoyed watching TV, especially Jeopardy and sports, and reading the newspaper. In his brief time at the Soldiers’ Home, he won over the hearts of the staff with his sweetness and quiet gentleman-like behavior. He will be missed by many, especially his cousins: Robert Simpson of Holyoke; Janet and Thomas Galczynski of Westfield; Emerson Gorham of Florida, and Kathleen Wood of South Carolina. All services are private. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Ed to the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home Recreation Fund, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040. The Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
