HOLYOKE

Harriet Brezinski, DHM, died on Wednesday, October 18th, at the Marian Center, home of her religious community, the Daughters of the Heart of Mary. She was born to the late Stanley and Lottie (Bialorucki) Brezinski, in Lorain, OH, 98 years ago.  Harriet entered the international congregation of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary in 1952, and made her vows in 1955 in the community house in New York City. From there she moved to Chicago where she took studies at Loyola University earning a bachelor’s degree in education and theology. She subsequently taught in the Chicago Catholic Schools for 12 years. Harriet was then appointed as Co-director of Religious Education in Tuckerton, Toms River and Barnegat, NJ, serving there for 11 years.  In June 1981, she was transferred to the congregation’s school in Buffalo, NY, Nardin Academy where she taught for 15 years.  One of Harriet’s greatest joys was her time with the Montessori School children at Nardin Academy. In May 2004, she moved to the Marian Center as an active member of the DHM community. Several years later declining health required that she move to the Center’s health care unit to where she brought her wit and significant presence. In addition to her parents, Harriet is pre-deceased by brother John and his wife Fran Brezinski; brother Anthony  and sister Theresa. She is survived by her sisters Lillian (Richard) Grimes; (Walter/Dwight) Dlugosz-Francis; Florence Jaworski (Bob) and Joan (Michael) Jurbala as well as a sister-in-law Kathleen Brezinski.  She is also survived by her many well-beloved nieces and nephews to second and third generations; by her religious sisters, the Daughters of the Heart of Mary; and the Marian Center staff from whom Harriet received loving care.  A wake will be held at the Marian Center on Monday from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in the Marian Center Chapel; followed by internment at St. Jerome Cemetery, Holyoke, Fr. Robert Gentile, presiding.  Funeral services are under the direction of the Barry Farrell Funeral Home.  She served in several of her community’s missions: in Chicago, early testing for hearing loss in young children; Tuckerton and Toms River, NJ, religious education for Public Elementary School students. Harriet loved all children; but had a special fondness for preschoolers to 3rd graders at Nardin Academy’s Montessori School in Buffalo, NY, where she served for 23 years.  From Buffalo, Harriet was assigned to the Marian Center, Holyoke, in 2004.
