Helen Seward, R.N. Obituary

HOLYOKE

Helen Marie (Callahan) Seward of Holyoke died Tuesday February 20, 2018, at home surrounded by her loving family. Lynne was born in Holyoke on July 25, 1943, daughter of the late Patrick and Helen Callahan. Lynne attended Blessed Sacrament School and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1961. She graduated from Western Massachusetts Hospital School of Nursing in 1963 and later went on to receive her Associates Degree in Registered Nurse from Holyoke Community College. Lynne’s nursing career centered primarily on community nursing ranging from the early days of the Holyoke Detox on Elm Street to O’Connell’s nursing in the Holyoke Towers, and prior to retirement she worked primarily with children. Her career as a Registered Nurse inspired all three of her children into careers in the healthcare field. Lynne was born and raised and resided her entire life in the city that she loved Holyoke. Along with her husband Dan, she enjoyed a career and raised a family in a beautiful home on a hill. She was known for her love of life family and friends. Many people have been welcomed in her home. She loved Irish music, tag sales and her special stores. There wasn't a pitch game around that she didn't join. She mentioned that she loved being an old lady because it meant that she could go to the senior center and casino all the time. Lynne also had a love for travel which began with a trip to Europe in the mid 60s and she made her most recent trip to Israel with her sister Bonnie. Lynne had one of the biggest compassionate hearts and she routinely reached out to those who were less fortunate and offered a hand. Finally, to all that knew her, Lynne was one of the strongest woman we will know. She loved to gamble and for a long time she beat the odds. She was well loved. She died comfortable in her home.  She was predeceased by her parents Patrick and Helen Callahan, her brothers Patrick and Timothy and her sister Kathleen Renaud. She leaves her husband the love of her life Daniel. She leaves her daughter Regina Sanders and her daughter Helen of Feeding Hills, her sons Daniel of Brattleboro VT and Liam and his wife Kathleen of Somerville MA. and their children Frances, Mairead and Thaddeus. She leaves her best friend and sister Bonnie Callahan, and her very dear friends June O’Connor, Carole Houle and Sylvia Wall and many nieces and nephew. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:30am at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30am in St. Patrick Chapel of St. Jerome Church. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will take place Monday from 4:00 to 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center.
