HOLYOKE

James T. Coughlin, age 88, of Holyoke passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at the Holyoke Soldiers Home.  He was born in Holyoke, son of the late John F. and Mary C. (Reynolds) Coughlin and was a graduate of the former Sacred Heart High School.  Jim was a United States Navy Veteran serving in World War II and Korea.  He was a Eucharistic Minister at Sacred Heart Church and Blessed Sacrament Church.  He brought Holy Communion to residents of the Holyoke Soldiers Home on Tuesdays for fifteen years and to patients at BayState Medical Center for twenty years. Jim was the #1 card holder at the John Boyle O’Reilly Club.  Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Claire R. (Robert) Coughlin who passed away in 1974; a son, James T. Coughlin, Jr. in 2009; and two brothers, John F. and Edward Coughlin.  Jim is survived by two daughters, Debra Rubenstein and her husband Irwin of Sunrise, FL and Frances M. Shute and her husband Marc of Southampton, MA; nine grandchildren, James, Matthew, Anthony, Nichole, and Jesse Coughlin, Sara, Lyndsey, and Lauren Rubenstein, and Ian Shute; three great grandchildren, Bella, Eliana and Adam; and many loved nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. The Funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Jim to The Holyoke Soldiers Home Patient Account Fund, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
