Joan (Harrington) Golen, age 88, of Alvord Place Community died peacefully August 2, 2018 at home. She was born in Holyoke, MA on January 21, 1930. She was the daughter of the late Francis J. and Mildred (White) Harrington. She was a resident of Alvord Place Community in South Hadley, MA. Joan attended Holyoke High School and was a graduate of The Providence Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a hospital emergency room nurse in Holyoke while also working as a Private Duty Nurse. She was a member of the Trinity Circle Guild of St. Agnes. In her later years Joan found tremendous satisfaction in her volunteer work helping first graders to read at the Plains Elementary School in South Hadley. Joan was predeceased by her husband of 45 years Dr. Francis R. Golen O.D. She is survived by her daughter Paula (Golen) Deglis and her husband John of Southwick, MA, her son Francis H. Golen and his wife Andrea of Malvern, PA, two brothers - the late William F. Harrington and his wife Yvette of Chicopee, MA and John Harrington of Wayne, PA. She also leaves her beloved grandchildren Kristen, Jennifer, Kevin and Sean, along with her most precious great grand daughters Johanna Frances Spracklin, Quinn Cecelia Golen and her very dear friend since grade school, Janet Kelley O'Brien of Holyoke. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church at 1945 Northampton Street, Holyoke, MA on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 with visitation beginning at 10am followed by Mass at 11:00am. Burial will follow Mass at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery, 152 Pittroff Avenue, South Hadley, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Judes Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
