HOLYOKE: Josephine A. (Czerwonka) Mahlman, 99, of Holyoke, died on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at her home, just six weeks shy of her 100th birthday. She was born in Holyoke, daughter of the late Antoni and Margaret A. (Mach) Czerwonka. Josephine was a 1935 graduate of Holyoke High School, a 1937 graduate of Bay Path College and Northampton Commercial College. She was a Certified Public Accountant for 27 years for Walter Czerwonka Accounting, retiring in 1973 and worked as a real estate agent. Josephine was a former communicant of Mater Dolorosa Church. She belonged to the MA Public Accounting Association for 25 years and was a MA Notary Public for over 27 years. Josephine was a longtime member of the Holyoke Women’s Club and the General Federation of Women’s Club. Josephine loved to travel over the years, including spending a month in Europe and visiting family in Texas and Martha’s Vineyard. She had a flair for creative design of clothing and exquisite needlework. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Carl F. Mahlman who died in 1991, her brothers, Dr. Joseph S.C. Mach and Walter Czerwonka, and her sister Albina McGaughey. Most of all, Josephine loved spending time with her surviving family who knew her as “Baci”, including her daughter, Nancy A. Gendron of South Hadley, two grandsons, Anthony Gendron from Austin, TX and Matthew Gendron from Port Washington, NY, five great grandchildren, Joaquin, Olivia, Lily, Jake and Miles, and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 5th at 10:00 a.m. in the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street. Burial will follow at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery, South Hadley. A calling hour will be held Saturday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dakin Humane Society, 171 Union Street, Springfield MA 01105.
