HOLYOKE
Michael James Lavelle, age 73, died peacefully with his loving family by his side on Monday January 6, 2020 at Baystate Medical Center. Michael was born in Holyoke, son of the late Philip and Beatrice (Monaghan) Lavelle, of County Mayo, Ireland, and was a 1965 graduate of Holyoke Catholic High School. Mike was drafted in 1968 by the United States Army and served with the 11th Brigade of the Americal Division in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970. He served as a P.O.W. Field Interrogator. Mike retired after 37 years as a Lineman for Verizon, formerly New England Telephone Co. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Red Sox and his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Mike loved traveling along the coast particularly enjoying time with family in Ogunquit, ME and the beaches of Misquamicut, RI and West Dennis, MA, as well as Pompano Beach, FL. Michael was predeceased by his beloved wife of 36 years, Eileen C. (Reilly) Lavelle in 2007. He is survived by his loving children: Margaret “Meg” Buckley and her husband Jamie of Milford, MA, Amy Lavelle Scalco of Annapolis, MD, and Phil Lavelle of Holyoke; three grandchildren: Michael, Colleen and Mary Buckley; two brothers: Philip Lavelle and Francis Lavelle; a sister, Sally (Lavelle) Dean. He was predeceased by his siblings, John Lavelle, Charles Lavelle, Theresa (Lavelle) Pollard, and Sr. Mary Lavelle, SSJ. Uncle Mike, ever the story teller with an infectious laugh, will be missed by many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Monday January 13 at 10:00am from Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by Mass in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, at 11:00am. Committal with Military Honors will be held at 1:00pm in the Chapel of the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam. Calling hours are Sunday January 12 from 2:00 to 5:00pm.
