Richard Gilday Bligh III, 65, of Holyoke, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side on Thursday November 22, 2018. Rick was born in Holyoke, son of the late Richard G. Bligh II and Rose Virginia (Duggan) Bligh. He graduated from Holyoke Catholic High School Class of 1971 and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Westfield State University and his Master’s Degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Rick had an illustrious 40 year teaching career in the Holyoke Public School system, where he was a mentor to many, and was looked up to and admired by all. He had a passion for cars, enjoyed his second home in Florida, and cherished his time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Joanne C. (Turcotte) Bligh; his daughter, Amanda (Bligh) Weaver and her husband Jake of Ashburnham, MA; his son Andrew Bligh (Brenna) of Hartford, CT; his sister, Rosemary (Bligh) Bernier and her husband Larry of Holyoke; brother, Michael Bligh (Carol) of Holyoke; his step-children: James Farrell (Colleen), Margaret Palpini (Joe), Christian Haley (Manda), and Ethan Haley; his step-grandchildren Avery Grace Palpini and John Ryan Farrell; and many cousins, nephews, and close friends including his best friend Bob Celi. Rick will be fondly remembered by all for his wit, storytelling, and positive attitude. The funeral will be held Tuesday November 27 at 9:00am from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by Mass in Blessed Sacrament Church at 10:00am. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
