Sophie T. (Ziomek) Jarek, 98, of South Hadley, passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Mont Marie Health Care Center. She was born in Holyoke, daughter of the late John and Tekla (Szymczyk) Ziomek and graduated from Holyoke High School Evening Division where she was the Secretary of her class. During World War II she tested gun sights for battle ships; she later worked at Whiting Stationery. Sophie had lived in Holyoke and South Hadley and was a communicant of Mater Dolorosa Church. She was the widow of Frank A. Jarek, who predeceased her on January 6, 2001. Sophie is survived by a daughter, the Reverend Doctor Susan F. Jarek-Glidden, and her husband, the Reverend Anthony Jarek-Glidden, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by three brothers, Tony, Walter and Mitchell (known as Mike or Mickey) Ziomek. The Funeral will be held Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton St. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Cross Church, Sycamore Street, Holyoke. Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery, South Hadley. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. The family requests to please omit flowers; Memorial contributions may be made to the Polish Cultural Center of Discover and Learning, 33 South Street, Chicopee, MA 01013 or to Rev. Dr. Jarek-Glidden’s former parish, Quincy Community United Methodist Church, 40 Beale Street, Quincy, MA 02170, where Sophie was loved and which she loved very much.
