Alonzo "Lonzo" Gamble Obituary
Alonzo “Lonzo” Gamble, beloved brother, uncle, musician, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love and memories of a life richly lived through family, faith, and music. Born in Mobile, Alabama, in 1943, Lonzo spent his formative years in the South before his journey led he and his family north to Uniontown, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from high school. Lonzo had a calling to serve and he joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. His family moved further north to Holyoke, Massachusetts. He decided to move to Holyoke as well, where he went on to build a life rooted in family, community and devotion. Lonzo worked for 15 years as a die cutter at Pratt & Austin in Holyoke and for several years as a bus driver for PVTA. Beyond his work, he was a lifelong and faithful congregant of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where he served proudly as an usher, choir member, and gifted piano player. His faith and love for music were inseparable, and music remained the backdrop and heartbeat of his life. A truly gifted soprano singer and accomplished pianist, Lonzo brought joy wherever he went. He especially cherished opportunities to make music alongside his brother, Henry Gamble Jr., whose voice and companionship meant so much to him. Whether in church, at family gatherings, or among friends, Lonzo’s music lifted spirits and created lasting memories. Though he never married or had children of his own, Lonzo’s life overflowed with love from his large and devoted family, including siblings, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and countless close friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, undeniable humor, and gentle spirit. Lonzo was predeceased by his parents, Henry Gamble Sr. and Ader Belle Fisher, both of Holyoke; his brother, Henry Gamble Jr. of Holyoke; and his sisters, Dorothy Carroll Wardell and Rosemary Gamble both of Holyoke. Also predeceased by nephew Keith Gamble of Holyoke and niece, Donna Gamble of Holyoke. He leaves to cherish his memory his nephew Kevin Gamble and wife Linda of Orange County, California; nieces Ava Ward and husband Jim of Springfield, Valerie Gamble of Holyoke, Kim Gamble of Glendale, Arizona, nephew Kenny Gamble and wife Anita of Charleston, South Carolina, niece Shelda Levalle of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, predeceased by her husband Carl; nephew Daryl Gamble of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, nieces Nikki Gamble of Atlanta, Georgia, Trina Wardell of Holyoke, along with many loving grandnieces, grandnephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Of special note, Mary Gamble (former sister-in-law), Diane Humber and Mrs. Tiggle. Lonzo will be laid to rest on June 5. Viewing hours will be from 11:00 to 12PM at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Holyoke. The funeral will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church from noon to 1 PM, followed by a Repass Celebration of Life also at Bethlehem Baptist Church to take place immediately following the funeral service. Lonzo’s song may have ended, but the music and laughter he brought into the lives of others will continue to play on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
