Ann C. (Gyursky) Gorman Obituary

Ann Catherine (Gyursky) Gorman, aged 96, died peacefully May 24, 2026, at her home in Holyoke.  Born in Bound Brook, NJ in 1930, the only child of John E. and Anna (Ondeiro) Gyursky, she was educated by the Sisters of Notre Dame at St. Joseph’s School and was a 1947 graduate of Bound Brook High School.  In emulation of an admired teacher, she began in early childhood to spell her name “Anne,” as most people would come to know her.

When her father’s union went on strike, she dropped a plan to attend Syracuse University and began a career in banking with the Bound Brook Trust Company where she was a teller for five years. At a church function during that time, she met Louis Owen Gorman, a recently minted high school history teacher and assistant basketball coach. On June 21,1952, they married at St. Joseph’s Church, where Anne previously had celebrated First Holy Communion and Confirmation.

Soon thereafter, the couple moved to Holyoke, her husband’s hometown, when Lou joined the faculty at Holyoke High School. (Subsequently, Lou would become the Director of Guidance at South Hadley High School and an admissions officer at Holyoke Community College). They welcomed the first of their four children in 1953.

A dedicated parent, proud grandmother, caring daughter and loyal friend, Anne enthusiastically engaged with her adopted city and neighbors. She volunteered at the YWCA, served as a Girl Scouts leader, was active in the Kirtland School PTA, and attended some classes at the local college.  She also assisted her husband’s work with the Titanic Historical Society, based in Indian Orchard, serving as its international membership coordinator, a position she held into her 90s.

In the early 1970s, Anne resumed her career. At the Hadley Falls Trust Co., which became Shawmut Bank (now Bank of America), she rose to the position of Head Teller. There, she cheerfully helped more than a few customers learn to balance a check book and trained numerous novice bankers how to handle transactions and “prove up” their cash drawers at the close of business.

After retiring from Shawmut Bank, Anne volunteered at the Holyoke Public Library so frequently and effectively that she was the natural hire to be coordinator of interlibrary book loans, which she proudly handled until aged 88. Mention a Massachusetts community and Anne would promptly state whether it had a public library.

An avid reader, Anne also loved to garden, sew, and travel. Beginning with her husband and continuing with her children and friends, Anne joyously visited dozens of the United States, Europe, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Canada; and sailed the Caribbean and eastern Pacific via the Panama Canal.

Anne lived a full life rooted in faith, family, and friendship. That foundation fortified the dignity, compassion and humor she bravely displayed following the untimely death of her beloved husband in 1991 and tragic deaths from pancreatic cancer of daughter Patricia A. Kuralowicz (2022) and son Louis O. Gorman III (2023).

Her survivors include devoted children Edmund of Holyoke and Mary Carol of South Hadley; beloved son-in-law Anthony Kuralowicz of Chicopee and daughter-in-law Mary Ellen (Manitsas) Gorman of Southampton; and loving grandchildren Alexandra Mandzak (Mike) of Boston, Michael Mandzak of Blacksburg VA, Karissa Sudol (Fil) of Holyoke and Janelle Gorman of Quincy MA.

The funeral will be held on Saturday June 6, 2026. A visiting hour commences at 9:00 am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, Holyoke, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 in the church. Committal prayers and burial will follow in Saint Jerome Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to the Holyoke Public Library, 250 Chestnut Street, Holyoke MA 01040 or a charity of your choice.
