Ann Hegy Obituary

WINDSOR, CT

Ann Marie O’Brien Hegy, 69, of Windsor, CT, beloved wife, mother, sister and grandmother, departed this life, surrounded by her family, on September 24, 2018 after a valiant battle with kidney cancer. Ann Marie was born on August 7, 1949 in Holyoke, MA to the late John and Marie Courtney O’Brien.  She was one of four children.  She had two older brothers, Mark O’Brien and Daniel O’Brien and one younger sister, Carol Masciadrelli, and several nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.  She was a 1967 graduate of Holyoke High and 1971 graduate of UMass Amherst.  She went on to work for nearly 30 years in the insurance industry as a defined benefit specialist, earning her CEBS designation and retiring from Mass Mutual in December of 2017.  She was a communicant of St. Damien of Molokai Parish in Windsor, CT. She married her husband of 43 years, Thomas Hegy, on October 18, 1975.  They enjoyed spending special time with family, dining out at their favorite restaurants, attending numerous concerts and shows, and time away with each other, especially at the beach. Ann Marie was incredibly proud of her children, Shannon (Hegy) Spielman of Saunderstown, RI and Brien Hegy of Los Angeles, CA.  She loved them unconditionally, and was their biggest cheerleader, pushing them to achieve their dreams. Perhaps her newest title was her proudest, that of Nana.  Ann Marie adored her first and only grandson Carter, soaking up every ounce of the short 14 months she got to spend with him. One of Ann Marie’s favorite days of the year was the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  She won the title of Holyoke Colleen in 1971 and in doing so, was selected as a participant in the Rose of Tralee contest.  One of her fondest memories was traveling to Ireland with her mother following her Colleen win. The quintessential hostess, Ann Marie always enjoyed entertaining family, friends and neighbors with festive parties and savory dinners through the years. She was famous for her cooking, especially her award-winning clam chowder. We know Ann Marie is now at peace, and hope she is enjoying a glass of champagne on the beach, one of her favorite places to be. The funeral will be held Friday September 28 at 10:15am from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street Holyoke, MA followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30am in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA. Burial will be held in Notre Dame Cemetery, South Hadley. Visiting hours for Ann Marie will be Thursday September 27 from 4:00-7:00pm.
