Ann M. (Foley) Nagy Obituary
Ann M. (Foley) Nagy, formerly Ann Koske, a lifelong resident of Holyoke, passed peacefully on April 26th at the age of 87. A true angel, Ann cared for her own mother, Rose Foley, in her final years at home until she passed at the very same age about 31 years ago. She selflessly went from having a hospital bed in her living room for her mother to two cribs for each of her daughters’ firstborn children, born a week apart. Ann was lucky enough to be married to two wonderful men. She is predeceased by her first husband, Robert M. (Carrots) Koske, who passed away in 1984 following a brief battle with cancer. She then connected with Alexander (Pete) Nagy, who happened to be an old hunting and fishing buddy of Carrots. A mutual friend said, “Hey, you should stop in and see Ann.” He showed up at the door one day and asked her if she wanted to go for a ride. The rest is history. This led to a second wonderful marriage. They enjoyed 36 years together. Following Pete’s retirement, they drove every single day to the Quabbin Reservoir, walking across the dike, hiking in the woods, getting to know the park rangers, and stopping for breakfast or lunch. They had many happy years together before health issues began to take a toll. This prevented them from driving, which left them homebound and dependent on family members to take them for those rides through Quabbin. One would think that spending 24 hours a day homebound would wear on a couple. Not Ann and Pete. We could peek in on a Ring camera that was installed for wellness checks and they would be sitting on the couch holding hands and watching Gunsmoke. Pete always reminded her that her “show” was getting on, and he would suffer through an hour of General Hospital each afternoon. Ann was predeceased by her beloved mother, Rose (Bumbera) Foley, her father, Jerome Foley, and her brothers, Jerome M. Foley and Francis M. Foley. Our mother was the best. There’s no other way to put it. Four years of shingles-related nerve pain in her right shoulder and a bad knee, but she never complained about anything. Ann’s grandchildren have so many great memories, walking to McDonald’s with two in a side-by-side carriage and two others walking alongside the carriage, or getting dragged to the local Hallmark store before dawn for the latest Beanie Baby release. The walls of her home are filled with photographs of her children and grandchildren, including her firstborn grandchild, Amber (Koske) Richardson. After that came Nicole Koske, whose role recently reversed when she became one of Ann’s caretakers. Nikki treasured the time she spent with her grandmother. She also leaves behind grandchildren Kayla-Marie Koske and Savannah Koske, as well as four great-grandchildren. She will be terribly missed by her two daughters, Irish twins born a year apart on the same day: Karen (Koske) Hobert and her husband Daniel “Birdbo” of Chicopee, and their children, Robert Hobert and Alyssa (Hobert) Montefusco-Vega and her husband Nick. In his own retirement, Birdbo took on the role of driver, getting them to many doctor appointments and doing weekly grocery shopping. She also leaves behind her daughter Susan (Koske) Duda and her husband John of South Hadley, as well as their children, Julia and Samuel Duda. She leaves behind her two sons, Robert M. Koske and Francis M. Koske, both of South Hadley. She had many nieces and nephews as well. She also leaves behind Pete’s son, Mark, who would serenade them with songs on his guitar when he visited from Nevada. Ann was a proud resident of Holyoke and lifelong friends with her neighbor Rosalie Page, and we are forever grateful for her friendship and her devotion to Mom, always taking a walk up Willow Street to visit with Ann and Pete. A special thanks to her at-home caregivers, Donna Koske, Jodi Nunes, and Jenny Rivera. They are all angels. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
