Ann Marie (Satkowski) Goeldner Obituary

Ann Marie Goeldner, 85, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at The Arbors in Chicopee, MA. Born on March 11, 1939, in Holyoke, MA, she was lovingly raised by her parents, Henry and Marguerite (Tisdell) Satkowski, alongside seven siblings. Ann Marie attended Immaculate Conception Elementary School and graduated from Rosary High School in 1956, after which she worked for several years as an office assistant at a mill in Holyoke. In 1960, Ann Marie married Robert W. Goeldner (1937-2024), and together they raised six children in South Hadley. After their marriage ended in 1983, and once her children were grown, Ann Marie returned to Holyoke, living for a time with her sister Theresa on Beech St., then on Tokeneke Road and then for many years at the Mt. Marie Senior Residence where she formed many lasting friendships. Ann Marie was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in South Hadley and more recently a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Holyoke. For years she poured her heart and soul into volunteering countless hours for many “prayer line” phone services. She was so committed to her work on the prayer lines that it was often joked that she had a direct line to God himself. In her 50’s she studied early childhood education at Holyoke Community College but, after raising six kids, the truth is she probably could have taught the class herself. She was known for her faith and kindness, always ready with a smile, phone call, card, or prayer. Her children remember her as a wonderful mother—patient, kind, and loving—who instilled in them a deep sense of compassion and empathy for those less fortunate. To Ann Marie, success was not about what you got, it was about what you gave, and she lived her life accordingly. Ann Marie was proud of her Polish heritage - the food, language, music and, of course, Pope John Paul II. She had a great sense of humor and a warm, generous spirit. She enjoyed cooking, and her legendary Mace Cake was not only delicious, but also famous for missing a different ingredient every time she made it. Still, the ingredient she always included was the only one that really mattered, Love. She cherished the simple things: spending time with family and friends, saying the rosary, and admiring (and occasionally painting) nature. In addition to her five daughters; Carolyn Goeldner of San Francisco, CA, Anita Harding and her husband Kelly of Thurmont, MD; Gretchen Carbone and her husband Joe of Ft. Myers, FL; Erica Metro and her husband Richard of Redwood City, CA; Geraldine "Gigi" Mancuso and her husband Peter of Ludlow, MA; and her son, Robert "Bobby" and his wife Jacqueline of Hingham, MA, Ann Marie also leaves 10 grandchildren (Jacob Harding, Mee Rae Harding, Nick Carbone, Jenna Carbone, Tate Metro, Maya Metro, Emilio Mancuso, Dominic Mancuso, Lucas Goeldner, Annika Goeldner). She also leaves her siblings; Theresa Marion of Holyoke; Mary Thompson and her husband Edgar of Hudson, FL; Helen Satkowski of Lexington, KY; Monica Laramee and her husband William of Berea, KY; Joseph and his wife Joanne of Hadley, MA, and Gerard and his wife Carol of Feeding Hills/Agawam, MA, along with many nephews and nieces who will all remember her fondly. She is predeceased by her brother Peter who passed in 2013. AnnMarie truly believed in the inherent value of every person. She encouraged those around her and lived by her faith as best she could. She once said that she thought she might have figured out life and why we’re all here on earth. She said it was, “to help each other.” Her family believes there’s a special place in heaven for Ann Marie—say a prayer, and you might just reach her on a direct line. Calling hours will be from 4:00 to 7:00pm on Monday, October 7 at Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton St, Holyoke, MA. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Tuesday, October 8 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Holyoke.
