Carl C.F. Dirkes Obituary

Carl C.F. Dirkes, 65, of Granby, MA, passed away on October 11, 2025. He leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Rita; daughter Mary and her husband Daniel Brunetti; son Michael; and beloved granddaughter, Madelyn Brunetti. Carl was the third of five children, leaving behind his mother, Elisabeth and siblings Tom (Bev), Ela, Tricia, and Stephen (Tal). He was predeceased by his father, Carl, in 2017. He was the son-in-law of Virginia and the late John T. Drew. He also leaves behind over 20 nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. Carl was born in New Rochelle, New York in 1960, spending most of his childhood in southern New Jersey before moving to Quincy, Illinois at the age of 15. It was in Quincy that he met Rita. After high school, Carl spent a year in Seattle, WA before following Rita to Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS. The two were married in 1985. After residing for two years in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, they moved to Western Massachusetts, eventually settling in Granby where they raised their family. In his free time, Carl enjoyed grilling, playing golf, going to NASCAR races with friends, and vacationing with his family on Sanibel Island. He was a lover of history, music and architecture and enjoyed sharing these passions with his family. Carl worked in pressure treated lumber sales for over 40 years. As a young man, Carl became VP of Sales for Northeast Treaters, Inc. and helped grow the company from a start-up to a successful business of over $120 million in sales annually. In 2006, Carl was recognized by his peers as The Lumber Salesman of the Year by the Northeastern Retail Lumber Association. Northeast Treaters was eventually acquired by Culpeper Treated Lumber, where Carl continued his career until his passing. Carl’s kindness and lighthearted humor will be missed by his family and friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his lifetime. Many glasses of bourbon will be raised in his honor. Calling hours will be held on Friday October 24 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm in the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke. A Funeral Mass will take place Saturday October 25 at 10:30 am at Our Lady of the Valley Church, 33 Adams Street, Easthampton, MA. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
