Carlos Jose Aponte, age 80, of Holyoke, MA, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2024. He was born and raised in Coamo, Puerto Rico, son of the late Maria Casilda Torres-Rodriguez and Juan Eugenio Aponte-Ortiz. In his late teens, he relocated to the U.S. mainland, dedicating his life to hard work and was a “jack of all trades.” He had a keen ability to fix just about anything. After more than 35 years, Carlos retired from the Holyoke Parks and Recreation Department. Carlos loved baseball and playing dominoes. Throughout the years, he played softball for various local teams and participated in domino leagues. He supported local softball teams and for some time owned the Coamo Social Club. Carlos spent his free time helping others in need, maintaining his yard and home, and keeping up to date with all national and international news. Particularly, he will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor and pulling pranks which sparked laughter for all. Carlos was predeceased by his brother Victor, sisters Gladys and Miguelina, and his beloved son Jeffrey Lee Aponte. He is survived by his daughters Malissa Y. Aponte and Yesenia Aponte; grandchildren Taisha L. Aponte and Jeffrey L. Aponte, Jr.; great-grandchildren Josiah Brown, Isabella and Aria Aponte; step-children Zoraida Nieves, Hector L. Santos, Christian and Jose Ruiz; brother Felix and sisters Nilda Torres, Sonia, Lucy, and Milagros Aponte; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, August 30, 2024, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, MA. On Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Jerome Church, 169 Hampden Street, Holyoke, MA. Burial will follow at Saint Jerome Cemetery on Northampton Street, Holyoke, MA. In lieu of flowers, you may consider a memorial contribution in memory of Carlos to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to a meaningful charitable cause of your choice, in his honor.
