SOUTH HADLEY – Carolyn (Vogt) Groves, 74, died in her home on May 24, 2022 with her family by her side. Born in Holyoke, MA, Carolyn lived much of her life in the Chicago area, before she and her husband returned to Holyoke in 2008. A graduate of Manhattanville College with a doctorate in church history from the University of Chicago Divinity School, Carolyn worked for many years as a theology professor at Loyola University and later as religious education director at St. Athanasius parish in Evanston, IL and then for the Diocese of Springfield, St. Francis parish in Belchertown. Carolyn devoted her life’s work in ministry towards those less fortunate, spending several years working with disadvantaged street women at Genesis House, Chicago. She and her husband, Nicholas enjoyed travel, especially spending time in Cape Cod, where many of the families’ happiest memories were made. She took great joy in her grandchildren and delighted in watching them grow and their curiosity for life. Above all else, Carolyn was a loving wife and mother, who had a sense of family that reached well beyond the bonds of kinship. There was always room at Carolyn’s table. She leaves her husband, Dr. Nicholas Groves of South Hadley, her daughters and sons-in-law Monica Groves and Shawn Pfaff of Fitchburg, WI, and Mary Elizabeth and Erik Kastman of Viroqua, WI, her sister and brother-in-law Virginia and Richard Pisano of Westfield, MA, two grandchildren, Alice and Soren Kastman of Viroqua, WI, and her niece Alyssa Preston of Los Angeles, CA.
