Charles Athas Obituary

HOLYOKE

Charles (Chuck) James Athas, 75, of Holyoke, passed away peacefully on Friday December 27, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Springfield, son of James & Antonia (Phakos) Athas. Chuck loved all sports, but held a special place for the New York Yankees, New York Giants, and Boston Celtics. Chuck left a long legacy in his hometown, having been a longtime coach in the Holyoke Youth Baseball League for Pats Supermarket and served on the HYBL Board of Directors as well as a past President. Chuck was a true “Holyoker” dedicating his time to the Holyoke Boys Club and the Holyoke YMCA. He was an avid golfer and held past memberships at Holyoke Country Club and Wyckoff Country Club where he made and maintained lifelong friendships. Chuck’s golfing achievements included SIX “hole-in-ones”, the most recent was June 4, 2012 at Wyckoff witnessed by Fran Skwira. He was a well-known barber for many years and served bravely on the Holyoke Fire Department for 25 years. Chuck was also co-proprietor of Ronnie’s Lounge. His biggest joy, however, was spending time with his family and watching his nieces, nephews, and grandchildren excel at their sporting events. He leaves behind his devoted and loving wife of 33 years Candy (Kane), two daughters Katie (Bryan) Suchecki and Heather Kennedy. Two brothers Jimmy (Nancy) and Ted (JoAnn). 8 grandchildren Caroline (Troy) Durr, Brianna and Daryn Tejada, McKenna Mortimer, Ella, Eli, Ava, and Addie Suchecki and one great granddaughter Mila Morales and several nieces and nephews whom he left a profound and lifelong impact on. He was predeceased by his parents Jim and Toni Athas and his daughter Kimmy. Calling hours are Saturday January 4th from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home 2049 Northampton Street. A Celebration of Life ceremony will follow at 6pm at Wycoff Country Club, Holyoke. The family would like to extend our thanks and gratitude to the staff at Day Brook Village for their care, compassion, and love for our Chuck.
