Daniel Strain Obituary

Daniel Francis Strain, age 88, of Granby, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 1, 2021 at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. He was born in Holyoke, son of the late John A. and Margaret J. (O’Neill) Strain and was a 1950 graduate of Holyoke Trade High School. Dan was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War and a retired toolmaker for Acme Chain Company. He lived in Granby for many years and was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and a friend of the Granby Senior Center. Dan was a man of many hobbies and a jack of all trades. He loved fishing, camping, trains, music, cars, and history, and there was nothing he couldn’t build or fix. But above all, the center and pride of his life was his family. Dan is survived by his wife of 66 years, Cynthia (Neumann) Strain; three daughters: Joyce Gumlaw and her husband Michael of Westfield, Paula Cole and her husband John of Quincy, and Mary Roy and her husband Gerard of Chicopee; five grandchildren: Megan Cole Brahim (Nasser), Katie Cole (Graham), Matthew Roy, Michael Roy (Deandra), and Nicholas Roy; two great grandchildren: Leila Brahim and Oliver Roy; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his two brothers, John and William Strain. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, February 5, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 256 State Street, Granby followed by burial in Smith’s Ferry Cemetery, Northampton Street, Holyoke. Masks and social distancing will be required for all services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cooley Dickinson VNA at https://givecdhc.partners.org/donate-cdvna.
