David Reed "Moon" O'Brien Obituary

David Reed O’Brien “Moon”, 68, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Baystate Medical Center on January 8, 2026. David was born on November 22, 1957 the son of the late Charles J. and Mary L. (Flynn) O’Brien. He was predeceased by his wife of 34 years, Sokha O’Brien. He is survived by his sons, Sopheak Mar (Olivia) and Sophath Mar (Phim), and his greatest joys, his grandchildren, Emily, Aleena, Londyn, Sophia, Shiloh, Cole, and Skyler, and his beloved dog, Muffin. David also leaves behind his brothers and sisters: Darby (Lynda) O’Brien, Elizabeth F. (Robert) Maloney, Mary L. (Michael) Karukin, Margaret M. (Peter) Magri, Charles J. (Lianne) O’Brien, Jr., Jonathan O’Brien, Alicia F. (Jack) Magri, Andrew L. (Lisa) O’Brien, and Jennifer A. (John) McCarthy.  He was predeceased by his sister, Louisa H. Guard, and his brothers-in-law, Jack and Peter Magri. He was a favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews.


He loved the Red Sox, the Celtics, the Cowboys, and the WWE. He worked for many years at Lindenmeyr Munroe Paper. David was kind, gentle, and hardworking. He had great wit and was a wonderful storyteller with an amazing laugh.  He had many long-lasting friendships with his Goodyear Park Gang and his Goose Rocks Beach Crew.


Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, January 19, 2026 for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at Blessed Sacrament Church in Holyoke. Burial will follow at Saint Jerome Cemetery. In memory of David, please perform a random act of kindness.
