Dorothea Mary "Dot" (Connor) Barry Obituary

Having made an indelible mark in the lives her family and many friends for a century, Dorothea passed away surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, August 21. She was raised in South Hadley, Massachusetts where she spent most of her life. As a young woman she worked in Beverly Hills, California before returning home. Dot, as she was known, was a member of women’s solidarity in her church. She was also a Girl Scout leader, a beauty care consultant, and a creative floral designer in Springfield, Mass, as well as Carey’s Flowers in her hometown for decades. She lived a life filled with deep conversation, warm laughter, and time spent with family. She would enjoy long, cozy holidays, and warm summer days from the beaches of Maine to Cape Cod with family. She was a long-time member of The Orchards golf course and spent many competitive hours at the bridge table. She was the life of the party. Dot was a legendary gift-shopper who spent countless hours in the Holyoke Mall, Talbots or Arts Unlimited, selecting the perfect birthday or Christmas presents. Her passion in the kitchen made her an extraordinary cook who also enjoyed her trips to Big Y and Atkins. Every family meal ended with more homemade desserts than could have possibly been consumed, though Dot was known to make sure everyone had their share! She was born to Daniel J Connor and Mary Jane Walker of Ireland, she was predeceased by her sister Eileen Francis Paxton of Ohio, and her brother Walker Francis Connor of Vermont. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 71 years, Navy veteran and former South Hadley Postmaster John G. Barry. She leaves behind her children John J. (Jeff) Barry and his late wife Janice of Granby, MA, Kathleen Gadbois and her husband Joseph of Westfield, MA. Dorothea leaves behind 3 grandchildren Barry Timothy Gadbois and his wife Meaghan of Windham, NH and Daniel Joseph Gadbois and his wife Danielle of Delmar, NY, and Danielle Barry of Granby, MA. She was beloved by her 4 great grandchildren, Abigail and John of Windham, NH, Connor and Grace of Delmar, NY. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial for Dot at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 28th at Saint Theresa of Lisieux Church, 9 East Parkview Drive, South Hadley.
