At the age of 100 on July 2nd the passing of Holyoke’s Dorothy Smith Homeyer Turcotte, affectionately known as Dottie, has saddened her small family and large number of friends. Dottie was the only child of Ralph and Mabel (Paquette) Smith and was born in Holyoke on April 14, 1922. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Holyoke College, class of 1943. Dottie married Air Force Captain Albert G. Homeyer, Jr. in 1945 and they had one daughter, Sheryl Irwin, MD of Southbridge, Massachusetts. After the death of her husband Dottie had a second marriage to Judge Alphonse Turcotte also now deceased. A devout Catholic and life time parishioner of Our Lady of the Cross Church, formerly Holy Cross Church, Dottie served as a Eucharistic Minister and until the time of her death took care of the financial matters of the church’s collections. Dottie was an excellent golfer and bridge player, a kind neighbor and loyal friend. In addition to her daughter, Dottie leaves her son in law Richard Irwin, MD, and her grandchildren Brendan Irwin and Lillian Irwin.
Calling hours for Dottie will be at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, on Wednesday July 6th from 4:00 to 7:00pm. A service will be held Wednesday evening at 5:00pm in the funeral home. A private burial will take place at a later date in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
