Edwin J. Chirgwin, age 88, of Holyoke, passed away on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. He was born in Holyoke, a son of the late William P. and Helen (McGeer) Chirgwin, and was a 1951 graduate of Holyoke High School. Ed was a United States Navy Veteran of the Korean War. He retired as foreman from the Holyoke Gas and Electric and also worked part time as a small engine mechanic at Sears. The past 20 years Ed enjoyed spending time at the South Hadley Senior Center and was a communicant of Saint Jerome Parish. When the children were younger, boating, skiing, and camping in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter were annual fun family activities. He was the widower of Barbara C. (Blain) Chirgwin who predeceased him on August 4, 2004. Ed is survived by four sons: Jeffrey, Gary and his wife Audrey, Brian and his fiancé Danielle Ralston, and David and his wife Tina; a daughter, Laura Ann Chirgwin; seven grandchildren: Daniel Bradshaw, Jennifer (Chirgwin) Sady, Pamela (Chirgwin) Jamie, Dariusz Chirgwin, Kristie (Chirgwin) Sirjoo, Gary Chirgwin, Jr., and Aiden Chirgwin; four great-grandchildren: Cameron, Mason, and Emerson Sady, and Andrew Jamie; a brother, Thomas M. Chirgwin and his wife Kathy; a sister, Helen Arnhold; a dear companion, Marie Grass, and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, William Chirgwin, and two sisters, Catherine M. Fleming and Patricia L. Ennis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Ed on Friday, November 5 at 10:00 am at Saint Jerome Church, 169 Hampden Street. Burial will follow at Saint Jerome Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, November 4 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the South Hadley Senior Center, 45 Dayton Street, South Hadley, MA 01075.
