Elizabeth B. "Libby" (Green) McKenney Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eizabeth Barbara (Green) McKenney. Elizabeth (Libby) McKenney, 94, from Westmoreland, NH passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 22, 2024 following a period of declining health. She was born November 7, 1929 to the late Anna Victoria and John Anthony Green. Donald C. McKenney, 92, also a resident of Westmoreland, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on August 29, 2017, also following a period of declining health. He was born February 25, 1925 to the late Charles and Helen (Cook) McKenney. Don earned a degree in Electronics from Springfield Technical Community College and served in the U.S. Air Corps. He worked in the Electrical Engineering Dept. at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and at Uni-Royal in Chicopee, MA. Donald and Elizabeth were married on November 15, 1947. They were married just shy of their 70th anniversary and were loving partners in all their endeavors. When they were younger Don and Libby enjoyed snow and water skiing, playing golf, traveling and entertaining their friends and family. Libby belonged to the Garden Club and also Heart to Heart, a caregivers group. They both joined the Pairs and Spares Club in town. Libby was an avid reader, basket maker, creating some exquisite baskets and was a talented water color artist. Libby was a feisty lady with a quick wit and memorable sense of humor. They both enjoyed playing Cribbage, being on the water or in the air. Some of their fondest memories included wonderful times spent at their vacation home in Brunswick, Maine. They also had amazing recollections of their travels in their 34’ sailboat traveling from Long Island Sound to Boston, Plymouth, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Libby and Don each earned their pilot’s license and thoroughly enjoyed flying over hundreds of hours in their Cessna plane, then their Comanche. They traveled the country over, sharing many breath-taking sights with their sons, Peter and David. The McKenney’s moved to Westmoreland, NH in the early 1980’s and remodeled their new home by themselves, one room at a time. Don was very handy and an accomplished carpenter. He was a hardworking man who was devoted to the care and support of his family. Nothing brought more pleasure than being “Dad” and “Grampa”. Don and Libby started the McKenney Electrical Company in 1959 in Holyoke, MA. Their sons joined the company and helped it to grow. The business continues today as McKenney Hearth and Home. Libby did the bookkeeping until she was almost 90. Libby spent the last 8 years of Don’s life as his devoted caregiver, while he struggled with Alzheimer’s disease. She selflessly and lovingly made sure Don was cared for in a safe environment. Don was able to remain in his home with Libby’s care and that of his family, neighbors and close friends. Don was survived by his sister, Marjory (Midge) Stone of Pensacola, FL. Nieces: Patricia Amos of San Diego, CA; Harriette Gonterman and Barbara Grass both of Pensacola, FL. Elizabeth, predeceased by her beloved husband, Don, sister, Marion Anderson and brother John Chester (Chet) Green. She is survived by her nephew, Richard Green and his wife Laura along with their son Jarrod Green and Jarrod’s wife, Ellie. Don and Libby are both survived by their sons: Peter McKenney and his wife Maureen of Dennis, MA; David McKenney and his wife Terry of Holyoke, MA. Three grandchildren: Sarah Spofford and her husband Jay of Brunswick, ME; Nora Wine of Agawam, MA; Anna Lampron and her husband David of Winchester, NH; and great grandson: Cooper Spofford. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Westmoreland Public Library, 33 South Village Rd, Westmoreland, NH 03467 or the Westmoreland Fire & Rescue Department, 772 Route 63, Westmoreland, NH 03467.
