Elizabeth Zabik Obituary

SOUTH HADLEY

Elizabeth Ann "Betty" (McGiverin) Zabik, age 85, passed peacefully on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at the Elizabeth Seton Residence. She was surrounded by her children, and passed listening to Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue'. Betty was predeceased by her husband Eugene and daughter Valerie. She was descended from strong Irish ancestors who emigrated from Ireland during the 1840's potato famine.  These settlers in the new world were hardy and determined. They worked as laborers, sailors and ferrymen. The women in her family tree were all strong Matriarchs. Betty was the strongest. Elizabeth was born to James and Helen (Fitzgerald) McGiverin in 1933 and raised in Holyoke. She was the youngest of four children, with three older brothers, James, Joseph and Fred. She met the love of her life Eugene, at age 7 while learning to play the piano. They were a couple for over 70 years. She is survived by four children; Larry, Gerry, Chris and Keith; 5 grandchildren Shannon, Lindsay, Julia, Paul and Rowan; two great grandsons, Jacob and Carlyle; and countless nieces and nephews. Elizabeth was a classically trained pianist. She attended the University of Massachusetts and became a Registered X-Ray Technician. She and Eugene married in 1955 following his graduation from Norwich University. Betty and Gene spent every day of their lives making the lives of their children and families better. They ensured that all of their children attended college and had opportunities they themselves did not have. Betty was well known for hosting family holiday parties. She dedicated her life to her husband and family. She was kind, loving and had a generosity of spirit that will be her legacy. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 9:15 a.m. in St. Patrick Chapel of St. Jerome Church in Holyoke, followed by internment at 11:00 a.m. in the Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery in Agawam. The family would like to thank Care Dimensions Hospice and the staff at Elizabeth Seton Residences for their kindness to Betty.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the Elizabeth Seton Residence in Wellesley, Massachusetts, 125 Oakland Street, Wellesley, MA 02481, (781) 997-1100.
