Eugene Murphy Obituary

Eugene J. Murphy, 89, of the Massachusetts Veterans Home at Holyoke, was called home, Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at Holyoke Medical Center. He was born in Springfield, January 5, 1935, son of the late Daniel and Margaret (Regnault) Murphy.

Growing up in the Old Hill neighborhood, he attended Holy Family Grammar School and graduated from Cathedral High School. He worked at Bond Bread Bakery before entering the Army. He served as a mortar man in the infantry, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. Following basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, he was stationed at Camp Casey, Republic of Korea and Fort Hood, Texas and locally in the Reserves. After his service he was employed as a sheet metal worker at Standard Time until his retirement.

Never forgetting his connection to service, he was a decades long member of the Disabled American Veterans and American Legion, which he represented in many Holyoke St Patrick’s Day parades and wreath laying ceremonies at the Holyoke Korean War Memorial. Well into his 80’s he served on the Honor Guard Rifle Team for the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Agawam.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1957, a 3rd Degree Knight and served on the Bishop’s Honor Guard. He was a Eucharistic Minister at Blessed Sacrament Church and the Veterans Home at Holyoke. He supported the Dominican Monastery of West Springfield, the Passionate Brothers of West Springfield, The Trappist Monastery of Spencer, The Benedictine Monastery of Pelham and the Sisters of St Joseph.

He is survived by his nephews Brian Murphy of Skillman, New Jersey and Kevin Murphy of Springfield and their families. Eugene was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Catherine “Kay” Murphy (Murphy) and brothers Richard and Daniel Murphy.

Eugene will always be remembered as a well loved, caring man with a zest for life, a love of music and dance and for visiting Cracker Barrel one too many times.

Eugene’s family extends their warmest thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Holyoke Veterans Home for their kindness and outstanding care given their uncle over the many years of his residency.

The funeral will be held Friday March 15 at 10:30am from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street. Burial with Military Honors will take place in Saint Jerome Cemetery. Visitation in the funeral home is Friday morning from 8:30 to 10:30am.
