Frederick J. Smith

HOLYOKE

Frederick J. Smith, age 89, of Holyoke, passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at the Holyoke Soldier’s Home.  He was born in Holyoke, son of the late Michael and Sarah (Shea) Smith, attended Holyoke Public Schools and Holyoke Community College.  Fred went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Western New England College in Springfield.  He was a United States Army Veteran and long time parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church.  Fred was one of the owners of The Advanced Offset Plate, Inc. and later worked at Teleflex Corp., retiring in 1994.  An avid golfer, he was a member of Holyoke Country Club and played with the Wild Geese.  He was a member of Holyoke Lodge of Elks, #902 and a loyal fan of all Boston sports teams, especially the Celtics.  Fred was the widower of Florence M. (Houle) Smith, who died in 2001.  He is survived by two sons, Thomas J. Smith and his wife Linda of Exeter, NH and Rick Smith of Holyoke; one daughter, Donna A. Horne and her husband William of Holyoke; five grandchildren, Alisha Smith and her husband James Thomas, Andrew Smith and his wife Meghan, Christian, Eric and Molly Horne; one sister, Madeline Smith of Holyoke and several nieces and nephews.  Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas and Donald Smith and two sisters, Mary Smith and Eileen Pappas.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 4, 2019 at 10:00am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton St. Burial will follow in St. Jerome Cemetery.  Calling Hours will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton St. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Fred Smith to Friends of the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke, Inc. P.O.
