HOLYOKE
George M. O’Connor, age 83, of Holyoke, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2020 at Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in Holyoke on December 20, 1936, a son of the late Timothy and Anne O’Connor. George was a graduate of Holyoke High School and served with the United States Army Reserve from 1959 to 1965. On May 6, 1961 he married his beloved late wife, Kathleen “Mickey” O’Connor. George was a 42-year employee of National Blank Book, Dennison National and Avery Dennison, working from 1954 until his retirement in 1996. Upon his retirement from Avery Dennison, he worked part time for Carey’s Flowers in South Hadley from 1997 to 2016. Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his beloved wife, Kathleen in 1999. He loved his sports teams, a longtime fan of the New York Giants, his family was finally able to convert him to a New England Patriots fan. He loved the Boston Red Sox and followed every Notre Dame Fighting Irish football game. George’s family and friends will always remember him as being a caring, gentle and kind man with a very big heart, who always put others first, while leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. He is survived by his adoring family; daughter, Deborah E. Parent and husband Kyle of Belchertown; a brother, Timothy O’Connor and his wife Karen of Monson; his two grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Matthew Parent of Knoxville, TN and Courtney Parent of Framingham, MA, as well as several nieces and nephews. Friends and family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, followed by burial in St. Jerome Cemetery, both in Holyoke. There are no calling hours. Masks and social distancing required. The Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street in Holyoke is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made in memory of George to the American Heart Association, 300 5th Avenue, Suite 6, Waltham, MA 02451.
