Gerald Thomas Greaney, “Gerry” or “Butch,” age 85, native of Holyoke, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2020 at his home in Deerfield Beach, Florida. He was born on February 17, 1934, son of the late James and Bridget (Curran) Greaney. Gerry was a proud graduate of St. Jerome High School, Cushing Academy, College of the Holy Cross, and Westfield State College. He was a longtime educator, a teacher and principal in the South Hadley Public School System. Gerry later retired as the Assistant Director of the Holyoke Housing Authority. He served as a Holyoke Ward 7 Alderman and a Holyoke Gas & Electric Commissioner. He faithfully attended Mass at St. Jerome and St. Ambrose Churches. Besides his parents, Gerald was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor (Moran) Greaney, and his siblings: James Greaney, Mary Curran, and Reverend John Greaney. Gerald is survived by his four loving daughters: Anne Greaney, Katie Whitcomb (Mike), Meg Greaney, and Ellen Pecia (Jim). He also leaves his seven treasured grandchildren: Bridget Newton (Gregg), Jennah Miller (Dustin), Hannah Harazmus (Ron), Noah Whitcomb (Emily), Tyler Lavoie, and Sadie and Owen Pecia, as well as his three cherished great grandchildren: Ellie, Ayla, and William Newton. Gerry will be fondly remembered by his nephews and nieces, other extended family members, and many close friends including his annual Notre Dame football game companions and the Bella Mar Condo community. Gerry spent his time enjoying the sun, the beach, and the pool. He avidly followed the stock market and his favorite sports teams. Most of all, he took pleasure in spending time with his children and grandchildren, especially traveling to many memorable destinations including: Pennsylvania, Ireland, Hong Kong, Surfside Beach, Walt Disney World, and sailing on the Disney Dream.
