Gertrude Footit Britton died peacefully at Mont Marie Health Care Center on May 14, 2020. She was the beloved wife for 62 years of the late James A. Britton. Gert was born on April 5, 1918 to William and Gertrude Footit. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1935 and Elms College in 1939. She was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Holyoke, MA. Billie, as she was affectionately known to family and friends, was the co-manager of the Diocesan bookstore “The Open Window Book and Gift Shop” for nearly four decades. Gert found great comfort in family, friendships and her strong devotion to faith. She is survived by her children Ann Kotfila, Barbara Moran, James (Donna), Timothy (Mary), Christopher (Joan), Elizabeth and her daughter-in-law Margorie McClenahan Britton, her 23 Grandchildren and her 32 Great Grandchildren. In addition to her late husband, she is predeceased by her daughter Noreen Minkler and son Jonathan. Gert is also survived by her youngest sister Susan Szetela, and her sisters-in-law Terry, Joan and Marguerite. She is predeceased by her brothers Jack, Douglas, Richard and Wallace, her sisters Nancy Dromey and Marie Jean Footit and her sister-in-law Barbara Footit. There are also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who brought Gert joy and love through the years.
Gert’s family would like to thank the staff, nurses and aides at Mont Marie Health Care Center for the care, compassion and kindness shown to their mom.
A celebration for friends and family to share stories of Gert’s impact on their lives will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Gertrude to the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee, MA or to Jericho, Holyoke, MA. The Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
