HOLYOKE
Hazel (Rider) Masse, age 99, of Holyoke, passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2021. She was born in Holyoke, daughter of the late Henry and Bertha (Hooper) Rider and was a graduate of Holyoke High School. Hazel attended Holyoke Community College and was employed at the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke for 30 years, retiring as Treasurer in 1981. She was a member of United Congregational Church in Holyoke where she was a Deacon Emeritus, Chairperson of Missions, and Superintendent/Teacher of Sunday School for many years. Hazel loved her family above all else, followed by her faith and church. She was an avid theater goer and was fortunate to travel most of the U.S and many countries around the world. She was a lifetime crafter and loved working on her computer – email, Facebook, virtual church gatherings, with Zoom and most importantly – creating, printing and mailing customized greetings cards for every occasion. It truly was her passion. She was predeceased by her husband, Armand Masse, in December of 1978 and her companion of the next 37 years, Lou Bukovsky, in February of 2015. She was also predeceased by all 13 of her siblings. Hazel is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, which she often called the sons, daughters and grandchildren she never had. Thanks to the help of family and friends, Hazel was able to live in her home of 70 years, until her passing. Public calling hours will be held Saturday, January 16th from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street. Funeral services will be private, and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to United Congregational Church, 300 Appleton Street, Holyoke MA 01040.
