James W. Armstrong, Jr. Obituary
Jim Armstrong, a respected commercial and industrial photographer whose work documented businesses, industries, and landscapes across New England for more than three decades, passed away on May 10, 2026. Jim believed strongly that people should question assumptions and think critically, reflecting the Jesuit educational tradition he valued from his time at John Carroll University where he majored in Philosophy. After graduation he taught Psychology at Holyoke Catholic High School before pursuing a career as a professional photographer. Photography became a lifelong passion that he eagerly shared with his son, Justin, who had a camera around his neck almost as soon as he could walk. Born to James Whitney Armstrong and Mary Taft Armstrong, Jim built a life defined by creativity, professionalism, and a love for beauty. He had the ability to instantly befriend people, and seemed to know someone wherever he went. A proud member of the 100th class of Holyoke High School, he ranked thirty second, and received honors. He loved running and ran in the first Holyoke Marathon. Jim remained athletic throughout his life. He played Softball for many years with the Relics, and gained many lifelong friends. As a photographer, his work ranged from product photography and business portraits to large-scale industrial and construction projects, with a particular passion for aerial photography. He specialized in photographing firearms. Over a career spanning more than 30 years, Jim earned the respect of clients and colleagues alike for both his technical skill and eye for detail. Jim retired in 2015, leaving behind a substantial body of work some of which can be seen online at https://www.armstrongrisk.com/jimarmstrongphotography. Above all, Jim treasured the life he shared with his wife, Sonia. Together they enjoyed kayaking, cross-country skiing, and memorable vacations to Maine and Nova Scotia. Sonia, who passed away in 2017, was the daughter of Mary and Joe Kudla of Holyoke and spent a distinguished thirty-year career as Business Manager for the University of Massachusetts Fine Arts Center. Jim was quite the beer aficionado. He would often speak about the various flavors you could taste in the beer as you continued to drink it. “Beer Thirty” was an important time of day. He also loved ice cream, maple syrup, maple cake, and butterscotch (not the same as caramel! He would always explain the difference.) Jim will be remembered for his artistic talent, adventurous spirit, and the kindness he extended to those around him. His legacy lives on not only through his photography, but also through the many lives he touched throughout his career and personal life. He is survived by his brother John Armstrong and his wife Teresa; sister Hilary Kliewer and her husband Paul; son Justin Armstrong and his wife Nita; grandson Andrew Armstrong and his wife Racquel. He leaves many dear “relishes” (relatives) - Mary Beth Kennedy, Chick Kennedy, Connie Kennedy O’Laughlin, Kathy Kennedy Fitz Gibbon, and Harry and Cathy Craven. He leaves beloved nieces and nephews Ben and Tati Armstrong, Nick and Ali Allard, and Krista and Mike Giacopassi. Jim and the family give special thanks to Billy and Mary Shanahan, Lew and Peg Lorraine, and Andy Kripp who were helpful and devoted friends right to the end. For the final 8 years of his life, Wendy Sweller was a close friend and support. Thank you to all of his wonderful neighbors - Renee and Lanette Sweeney, Roger and Janice Caron, Ross and Rachel Moloshok, Kathy Kennedy, and Nancy Landry who all showed extraordinary kindness. Thank you to the wonderful team at Holyoke Medical Center, the Hospice team, and Nova Leap Home Health - you all eased my Father’s pain so much. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 15 at 11:00 a.m. at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke. Burial will follow at Saint Jerome Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to a charity that helps animals, funds softball for young people, or otherwise lines up with one of Dad’s many interests.
