Jane E. Masse Obituary

Holyoke - Jane E. Masse, 89, devoted wife, mother and friend, passed away on Wednesday, April 8th at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, surrounded by loving family and close friends, following a brief illness. She was predeceased in 1990 by her late husband, Ronald E. Masse, whom she affectionately referred to as “Ace” and who had founded Masse & Sons Oil Company. She was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, where she had continued to volunteer her time every Monday, and had previously sung in the church choir. Until her illness, she lived an independent and active life from her Ridgewood Avenue home where she had lived for over 60 years. She was fortunate to be surrounded with helpful and caring neighbors, who provided her support and friendship, and to whom the family extends heartfelt thanks. Born in Holyoke August 23, 1936, to the late Heliodore Antaya and Edna (Goulding) Antaya, Jane grew up in South Hadley, where she attended schools and enjoyed spending time with friends, listening to music, roller skating and playing the accordion. After marrying Ronald in 1957, they raised three sons with Jane devoting herself to building a loving home life, while helping with operation of the oil company, volunteering in the boys outside activities (especially at the YMCA), and assisting others with the care of their homes and children. After the sons moved out and married, she continued to be a central figure in their lives. Five grandchildren became the pride and joy of her life, and she took every opportunity to spend quality time with all three families and help them in any way possible. She also continued as a trusted caregiver to the children of many friends whom she considered her extended family. Into her 60’s and 70’s, she continued her zest for life and adventure. She loved to hike and cruise, and had the courage to skydive, zip-line, hot air balloon, and ride speeding banana boats. As she settled into her 80’s Jane enjoyed monthly first-week luncheons with family and friends, playing cards including cribbage and canasta, taking various group bus trips, and volunteering at the Holyoke Senior Center where she enjoyed the company of so many dear friends. She looked forward to sharing lunch with them, setting up for Bingo every Friday and was more than happy to assist with rides and shopping for those who needed help. She will be deeply missed there. Jane is survived by her sons, Allen (wife Julie) of Fort Worth, Wayne (wife Janice) of Granby, Richard (wife Dee) of Ludlow; her grandchildren, Cassandra, David (wife Jana), Matthew, Nathaniel, and Alex (fiancée Kasia Wielblad); her brother John Antaya of Springfield; and a loving niece, nephews, and extended family. The funeral will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2026 at 9:00am from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, both in Holyoke. Burial will be at a later date. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, April 15, 2026 from 4:00 to 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Jane’s memory be made to the Friends of the Holyoke Council on Aging, 291 Pine St., Holyoke, MA 01040, which provided her with so much joy, purpose and companionship in her later years.
