HOLYOKE
God looked around his garden and found an empty space. God put his arms around Janet P. Belanger and lifted her to rest on June 29, 2021 at the age of 88. God’s garden must be beautiful as he only takes the best. Janet passed away peacefully at home in the arms of her loving husband, Rene F. Belanger.
Janet was born on September 28, 1932 in Holyoke to the late Thomas H. and Mildred (Moran) Peck.
Janet graduated from Holyoke High School in 1950 and attended Westfield State Teachers College and Holyoke Business School. She was employed at the former Holyoke Savings Bank where she met her husband. They were married on July 13, 1957.
Besides her husband Rene of 64 years, Janet is survived by her 4 children Rene D. Belanger, his wife Mary of Alexandria, Virginia; Sandra Belanger, Thomas Belanger both of Holyoke; and Patricia Wolohan, her husband Daniel of Shrewsbury and brother-in-law Donald Belanger of Chicopee. She also leaves a niece and 3 nephews.
Seven grandchildren Danielle (Belanger) Unser, her husband Joshua; Joshua, Zachary, and Rene Luke Belanger all of Virginia; along with Matthew, Patrick and Brendan Wolohan of Shrewsbury. One great- grandson Paxton Unser. Janet was predeceased by her sister-in-law Lorraine (Belanger) Rochford, and grandchildren Megan and Madison Wolohan.
Janet was employed as a Teacher’s Aid with the Holyoke Public School System. During this period, she devoted many hours knitting mittens and hats for the children. Janet retired in 1997 after 18 years in retail sales.
Janet was a devout Catholic and had a strong devotion to her church, Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of the Cross. She loved traveling to places such as Bamberg Germany, Hawaii, Paris, and London, baking, knitting, and hosting family gatherings.
Her funeral will be held on Thursday, July 8th at 9:00 am from Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, both in Holyoke. Burial will follow in St. Jerome Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be held on Wednesday, July 7th from 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Janet’s name, may be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital or to the Shriner's Hospital for Children.
