Joan M. (Golden) McCarthy, R.N.

HOLYOKE

Joan Mary (Golden) McCarthy, age 88, formerly of Holyoke, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at Eddy Village Green in Cohoes, NY. She was born in Holyoke, a daughter of the late John E. and Catherine M. (Griffin) Golden, and was a 1949 graduate of Holyoke High School and a 1953 graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. Joan worked as a Registered Nurse at various hospitals in Massachusetts including: Providence Hospital in Holyoke, Shriners Hospital for Children in Springfield, Baystate Medical Wesson Women’s Unit in Springfield, Noble Hospital in Westfield, and Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. Before moving to New York, Joan lived in Dennis, MA for over thirty years. She loved to take walks on the beach and have her family visit her on Cape Cod. An avid reader, Joan volunteered at the Dennis Library; she also attended Saint Pius Tenth Church in South Yarmouth, MA. Joan is survived by her seven children: Mary K. McCarthy, Susan Morris and her husband Bruce, Sharon Szumski, Maureen McCarthy, Robert C. McCarthy Jr. and his partner Anita Furmin, Eileen Dugre and her husband Jerry, and Ellen Hull and her husband Jonathan. She also leaves behind 18 grandchildren, 20 great- great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her brother, John E. “Jack” Golden. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Kathleen and all of the caregivers at Eddy Hawthorne Ridge in East Greenbush, NY for the compassionate care given to Joan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Joan on Saturday, September 5^th at 11:30 am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street. Calling hours will be held prior from 9:30 to 11 am at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street. Burial will be private.
