John F. Greaves Obituary

John Francis “Jack” Greaves was brought into this world on June 18, 1944. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his wife, Michelle, his son, Jay and daughter-in-law, Thanawan on the morning of November 22, 2024. Jack grew up in Holyoke, MA, attended Holyoke Schools, and graduated from Holyoke High School in 1962. Throughout his life of 80 years, 5 months and 6 days, he partook in multiple forms of employment. He began by working tobacco fields and then worked for Holyoke Food Market, Mountain Park, and Forest Park Medical as an EMT. Jack served on the Auxiliary Police for Amherst and Chicopee Police Departments, and on the Massachusetts Air National Guard 104th in Westfield, MA (1966-1995). Finally, he worked as a local school bus driver and PVTA bus driver. In addition to his employment, Jack's life was full of the extra-curricular. He was an adult advisor for the Youth Group at St. Paul's Episcopal Church (1969-1980). He was an adult leader in the Boy Scouts of America, serving on the Troop, Council and National Levels. He was a beloved volunteer Asst. Coach for Holyoke Catholic Boys Soccer, earning the nickname of "Doc." Jack was a Master Mason, having been the Master of Mount Tom Lodge in Holyoke, MA and Mt. Moriah Lodge in Westfield, MA. He advanced his membership in the world’s largest philanthropy group by joining the MELHA Shriners in Springfield, MA. During his time in the Shriners, he held multiple titles and greatly influenced the positive direction of the fraternity for 41 years. Jack is predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Helen Greaves, and brother-in-law, Pierre Mercier. He is survived by his wife, Michelle Greaves; his son, Jay Greaves; his daughter-in-law, Thanawan Greaves; his brother, Robert Greaves; sisters-in-law, Paulette Mercier, Anne Provost and her husband Albert, and Louise Mercier; brothers-in-law, Gerry Mercier, and Phil Mercier and his partner Linda Lasorsa; as well as several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. A Funeral Service will be held for Jack on Tuesday, December 10th at 12:30 pm at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, followed by committal with military honors at 2:00 pm at the MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Monday, December 9th from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, with a Masonic service to be held at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Jack to Shriner’s New England, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Way, Memphis, TN 38105.
