John J. “Jocko” Griffin passed away on Friday, November 5, 2021 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana after a brief illness. John was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts to John J. Sr. and Anna (Bresnahan) Griffin. He attended Holyoke Schools graduating from Holyoke High School in 1966 where he excelled on the football team as well as scholastically. He graduated from UMASS Amherst and also the Stockbridge School of Agriculture in Amherst. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971 attaining the rank of Specialist 4. His service included a tour of duty in Vietnam with the 1st Air Calvary Division, earning numerous citations including a “Combat Infantry Badge” and an “Air Medal.” Besides his parents, John was predeceased by a brother, Liam, in 2001. He is survived by a sister, Joanne, of Southampton, MA, and brothers David M. (Christine) of Southampton, MA and Stephen J. (Crystal) of Westfield, MA. He is also survived by nephews Michael (Mallory) Griffin, John J. Griffin, and nieces Stephanie (Jared) Hague, and Riley Griffin. He is also survived by many cousins, aunts and uncles. Relatives and friends are invited to meet for a Mass of Christian Burial for John on Monday, November 15, 2021 at 9:30 am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, Holyoke. There are no calling hours. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA. The Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
