HOLYOKE: John F. Hamel, Sr., age 87, of Holyoke, passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Heywood Hospital in Gardner, MA. He was born in Holyoke, son of the late Wilber and Dorothy (Downie) Hamel and was a graduate of Holyoke High School, Holyoke Community College and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. John was a United States Army Veteran. He was the Treasurer for Southworth Paper Company. John was a member of the Holyoke YMCA, The Beavers Club, an avid fan of UMass football and basketball, and had been a youth soccer coach. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marie G. (LaPointe) Hamel; a son, John F. Hamel, Jr., of Holyoke; his nieces and nephews, Maureen Fitzpatrick and husband Dan, Ed Hart and wife Anne, Tim Harty, Mike Hart and wife Abby, and Dave Wallace and his wife Cynthia; dear friends Gerry and Carol Aubrey, and Daniel and Sara English; as well as his beloved pets Molly and Minou. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Wilbur Hamel, Dorothy Harty, Mary Wallace, Edward Hamel. Clare Hart and Kathleen Hamel. All services are private. A Celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date. The Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
