John E. Hurley, Jr.

John E. Hurley, Jr., age 84, of Holyoke, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Holyoke Medical Center, surrounded by family. He was born in Holyoke, son of the late John E. and Bertha F. (Rackliffe) Hurley, and was educated in Holyoke schools. John was the longtime owner and operator of Holyoke Appliance Repair & Sharpening Service. Prior to that he worked as a bank teller and clerk at the former Hadley Falls Trust Company in Holyoke, and also in the parts department of several auto dealerships and a truck repair service. He spent more than 25 years with the Boy Scouts as a leader. John earned the Silver Beaver Award and was named Director of the Wood Badge Program, accomplishments of which he was very proud. He was a member of Second Baptist Church of South Hadley, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons and Ushers, and was a member of the Men’s Club and other church groups. He was very proud of his gardens and was a Master Gardener. John was the widower of Carol L. (Aspden) Hurley, who died on August 31, 2021. He is survived by three sons: Greg and his wife Cheryl of Granby, Edward and his wife Mary of Holyoke, and Lee-Jay of Nantucket; a son-in-law, Larry Camus; seven grandchildren: Elizabeth Hurley, Alyssa Hurley, Sean Hurley (Molly), Kevin Hurley, Alexis Parks, Christopher Camus, and Aimee-Jean Welch (Eric), and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his niece Kristine Topor, who helped to care for him and Carol, and his beloved cat Lucy. Besides his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia Camus in 2002; a brother, Albert G. Hurley in 2017, and a grandson, Phillip Parks in 2021. A funeral service will be held for John on Tuesday, March 21st at 10:00 am at Second Baptist Church, 589 Granby Road, South Hadley. Burial will follow at Forestdale Cemetery, Cabot Street, Holyoke. Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 20th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holyoke VNA/Hospice Life Care, 575 Beech Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
