John J. O'Neill Obituary

Jack was our dad, Papa, and friend, and he will be greatly missed. Jack was born in Holyoke but moved to South Hadley when he was just old enough to hunt with the .22 rifle promised to him upon the move. He loved the open farm lands and the woods of South Hadley at that time, and found many adventures there with the good friends he made. As he grew older, his love would change to cars and drag racing in Orange, MA. His most treasured car was his 64 Corvette convertible. When Jack was 21, he met Patty while on a date with another girl at Hampton Beach. Two years later, they married. Jack and Patty lived in Granby and raised their three daughters there. He was a voracious reader, could play Chopin on the piano, and loved his Farmall A and teaching his daughters how to drive it. He also was a great shot and taught all of his girls to shoot and handle a firearm correctly. Jack would always have a big garden and was especially proud of the Silver Queen corn he grew as Patty grew tomatoes that she painstakingly canned for the winter months. Together, they shared a love for New England and often traveled to the Green Mountains, the White Mountains, and their favorite place, the shores of Lake Champlain in the Adirondacks. After the deaths of his beloved Patty and eldest daughter Kathy, Jack found the most joy in his two granddaughters, Patti and Kerry. As he grew older, he became a crossword fanatic and completed many New York Times puzzles. Jack leaves behind his daughters Patricia Bombardier and Nancy Jamieson, his sons-in-law Richard, Michael and JJ, and his granddaughters. Luckily, Jack loved to tell and hear a good story like any Irishman would, and he shared many of these with his daughters and grandchildren. These stories and cherished memories will remain in our hearts forever. “The ones we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day.” An Irish Blessing. Charitable contributions in memory of Jack can be made to the Kestrel Land Trust. Services will be private.
