John M. McGillicuddy, age 61, of Holyoke, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, May 19, 2021. He was the son of Lillian (Laverdiere) McGillicuddy Bacon; the stepson of William Bacon, both of Westfield, MA and Clearwater, FL and the son of the late Gerald McGillicuddy. Besides his mother and stepfather, John is survived by his two children, Julia McGillicuddy of East Longmeadow and Gavin McGillicuddy of West Springfield; two brothers, James (Ellen) McGillicuddy, a retired H.P.D. Detective of Holyoke and Michael McGillicuddy, a retired U.S. Postal Service employee, of Westfield, as well as his niece and nephews: Jamie, Cody, Michaela and Brendan. He also leaves his step-siblings: Janice (David) Visconti of Otis, MA; Beth (David) Mainville of Warwick, RI; Scott (Kristen) Bacon of Springfield, MA and Susan (Scott) Martin of Holyoke. John was a decorated Holyoke Fire Department Captain, retiring in 2015. Besides his love of the fire service, he also enjoyed gardening, fishing, golf and especially hockey which he played in the Holyoke Youth Hockey League, at Holyoke High School and most recently on the H.F.D. Hockey Team. During his years at Holyoke High School, the team won the Fay Division Championship in 1977 and John was named the to the All Western MA Honorable Mention Team during his senior year in 1978. The Funeral will be held on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at 9:00am from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will follow in Forestdale West Cemetery, Rock Valley Road, all in Holyoke. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.
