It is with enormous sadness and love that we share the passing of John P. (Jack) Skiffington, Jr. He died peacefully at his home in Southwick surrounded by his family on June 15, 2022.
Born in Holyoke on November 9, 1953, he was the son of the late John P. Skiffington, Sr. and Mary M. (Doling) Skiffington.
Jack grew up in Holyoke and attended Holyoke Public Schools before working at Sunshine Village in their sheltered workshop and on the janitorial crew at Westover Air Force Base. He also participated in the Special Olympics for many years.
He attended Baroco Habilitation Program in Agawam since 1998 where he enjoyed their many volunteer programs and activities.
In 2000 he moved to his “apartment” in Southwick. Jack made many friends, including his housemates and staff during his time in Southwick, many of whom came to see him in his final days.
Jack truly enjoyed life. He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. He especially enjoyed being around and helping people and was always up for a party. He loved music, baking, dancing, shopping, spending time with his family, and most of all vacationing. No vacation was too long, and Jack was often planning his next vacation while the current one was winding down. He was always ready to “pack a bag” and go.
He is survived by his sister Mary M. Healy and brother-in-law Bernie Healy of Holyoke, and his sister Patti Scott and brother-in-law Jim Scott of West Springfield. He also leaves nephews, Matthew Healy (Patrice), John Healy (Janara), Patrick Healy (Liz), and Michael Healy (Kim), and nieces Laura Scott and Ibby Rzegocki-Scott (Eric). Jack also leaves 9 great nieces and nephews.
Jack’s family will always remember and be eternally grateful to the BCARC Staff for the care and kindness shown to Jack over the years, especially the hard work to keep Jack at home for his final days. We are also thankful for the assistance of Baystate VNA Hospice.
Visiting hours will be held at Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home in Holyoke Friday June 24, 2022 from 4:00 – 7:00pm. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on June 25, 2022 at 10AM at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton St., Holyoke. Burial will be held privately in St. Jerome’s Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
